Long-Term Preservation

Long-term Digital Preservation Statement

Applies to: all 6 EP Journals Group journals.
Effective: 1 May 2026, version 1.0.

What we preserve and why

Journal of Natural Science Research and Review commits to keeping every article it publishes accessible in perpetuity, even if the journal site goes offline, the publisher ceases operations, or the journal is transferred to a different organization. To make that commitment real, we deposit every article in multiple independent preservation systems, so that no single point of failure can take an article out of the scholarly record.

This is the operational backbone of our open access guarantee. Open access only works if articles remain accessible after the publisher stops publishing them.

Where each article is deposited

1. PKP Preservation Network (PKP|PN). Every issue is deposited in PKP|PN at issue closure. PKP|PN is a distributed preservation network operated by the Public Knowledge Project, with content replicated across multiple participating libraries. PKP|PN is a member of the Keepers Registry, the directory of legitimate scholarly preservation services. We use the OJS PKP|PN plugin to automate deposit.

2. Zenodo. The full-text PDF of every article, plus its CrossRef metadata, is deposited in Zenodo within 30 days of publication. Zenodo is operated by CERN as part of OpenAIRE, and is itself preserved through CERN's long-term storage. Each Zenodo deposit gets its own DOI, providing a second persistent identifier for the article in addition to the journal's CrossRef DOI.

3. Internet Archive Scholar (Fatcat). Articles are harvested into Internet Archive Scholar through standard web crawling and OAI-PMH protocols. Internet Archive operates the Wayback Machine and the Fatcat catalog of scholarly works, both of which retain content even if the source publisher disappears.

4. LOCKSS / CLOCKSS (planned for 2026). We are completing the technical setup for LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) and CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) integration. Both are Keepers Registry members. Once active, every published issue will be replicated across LOCKSS-participating libraries worldwide and the CLOCKSS dark archive at Stanford University. Status of this integration is shown on the journal website.

5. Crossref metadata deposit. Article metadata — including title, authors, abstract, references, funding statements, and license — is deposited with Crossref at DOI registration time. Crossref maintains its own preservation arrangements via Portico. Crossref metadata is itself harvested into a wide range of downstream services that further amplify preservation through redundancy.

Verification

You can verify each article's preservation status:

  • CrossRef DOI: look up any article DOI at search.crossref.org. The DOI is stable; if the journal site moves, the DOI continues to resolve to the new location.
  • Zenodo: search by DOI or article title at zenodo.org.
  • Internet Archive: the Wayback Machine keeps snapshots of journal pages over time.

The journal's preservation status is also shown publicly on the Keepers Registry once each preservation arrangement is fully active.

What happens if the journal stops

If Journal of Natural Science Research and Review stops publishing, or if EP Journals Group ceases operations, the articles remain accessible through the preservation systems above. The CC BY 4.0 license under which they are published continues to apply, so anyone can also redistribute them through new channels (institutional repositories, mirror sites, third-party aggregators) without needing permission.

We have no plans to stop publishing. This statement is a contingency plan, not an announcement.

Reviewing this arrangement

The preservation arrangement is reviewed annually. The review confirms:

  • that the OJS PKP|PN plugin is functioning and recent issues have been deposited,
  • that Zenodo deposits for the year are complete,
  • that the Internet Archive harvesting is current,
  • that LOCKSS/CLOCKSS integration progress is on track.

The review outcome is recorded internally and any deviations are addressed within 30 days.
